Hao Hu - BioXFEL Beamline Scientist

After completing a Masters degree in Biomaterials at Sichuan University, China in 2013 and a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering at ASU in 2016, Hao Hu joined the Spence & Weierstall lab at ASU to develop microfluidics devices for sample delivery.

She has been working primarily on viscous injectors, supporting many BioXFEL experiments in Time-Resolved Structure Determination and Chemical Reaction Dynamics research using Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SFX), Small-angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). This research has taken her to many X-ray light sources worldwide such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS, X-ray Free laser, Stanford University, CA, US), SACLA (X-ray Free laser, Japan), PAL-XFEL (X-ray Free laser, Korea), Advanced Photon Source (APS, Synchrotron, Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, IL, US), Advanced Light Source (ALS, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, UC Berkeley, CA, US), National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II, Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY, US), ALBA Synchrotron (Spain), with more trips planned on the horizon.

She makes injection systems work at many different beamline setups, performs on-site troubleshooting and provides user training. Her numerous beamtime experiences provide first-hand feedback to improve injection systems, aiming for lower sample consumption, a more user-friendly setup, and applicability to expanded sample and experiment types. Hao also provides training during workshops where participants have hands-on experiences. These have included the recent sample delivery workshop at the 2019 BNL Users’ Meeting and the 2018 LCLS Users’ Meeting.

BioXFEL research groups planning beamtimes which could benefit from her experience should contact her (and John Spence).
