In an effort to enhance our undergraduate summer internship program, BioXFEL is partnering with other REUs to provide a more comprehensive experience. By participating in multiple internships within the Center and it's affiliates, interns will experience a broad range of techniques, approaches and environments. Our multidisciplinary approach to education provides our interns with a diverse array of skills, extends networking and increases their chances of being admitted into Graduate School. Below we have listed several internship programs within XFEL-related fields and provided links to their applications and more information.

Summer Undergraduate Programs

SLAC (SSRL/LCLS)- Is a National Accelerator Laboratory that is a world-renowned lfor their work in physics, chemistry, materials and environmental sciences, astrophysics, scientific computing, and many engineering fields. SLAC’s summer internship program offers exciting opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in science or engineering to conduct research. The SULI Program is sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science's Office of Workplace Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS).  The 2016 summer program at SLAC runs for 9 weeks, from June 20 to August 19 or for 8 weeks, from June 20 to August 12. Rice BioNetworks - Rice’s Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering (IBB) administers a NSF REU Program. This 10 week summer internship allows students to work on research projects under faculty mentors that draw from a range of approaches (classical biochemical and genetic to non-trivial theoretical models) to study naturally-occurring genetic networks, artificial genetic and metabolic networks, and biomolecular structure, function, and evolution. This program will also provide: a creative opportunity for students to develop innovative biotechnological ideas; leadership, mentorship and social retreats; special seminars and career development workshops; stipend and travel support; on-campus housing; a capstone research poster symposium; and an ethics and responsible conduct of research discussion seminar. LLNL -  Lawrence Livermore is also a participating site for the Department of Energy's SULI program and has other opportinities available for interns. Learn more and APPLY HERE

DESY - Another great program to try is the DESY Summer Student Programme at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. This is the home of the new European XFEL and offers undergraduate students in physics or related natural science disciplines the possibility to participate in the research activities of the laboratories. Selected candidates join in the day-to-day work of research groups at the DESY Laboratory in Hamburg or Zeuthen (Berlin) and participate in APPLY HERE

RPCI - While BioXFEL does not specifically support careers in the medical field, we still like to give our students the chance to explore their options. If you would like to gain some insight into medical research careers, please consider applying to an internship program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). Roswell offers experiences in laboratories and clinical settings that include Cancer biophysics, Biostatistics, Tumor immunology, Cancer prevention/epidemiology, Cancer cellular/molecular biology, Cancer genetics, Molecular pharmacology and Cancer therapeutics. BioXFEL - Even if you have already completed an internship with BioXFEL, you are welcome to apply again for another summer internship. Retention of our students, both within the Center and in XFEL science fields, is important to us. We can often place returning students in the same lab as previous years or provide them with a new experience in another lab or another site. A returning appointment is not guaranteed and requires another application. If you would like to join us for another summer, please see our application page. APPLY HERE

University of Pittsburgh - Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). This program, administered by the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program (IBGP) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, provides an exceptional environment for students to gain research experience under the guidance of internationally recognized scientists. SURP provides an intensive 10-week research experience (May 22 - July 28) designed to help undergraduates perform outstanding cutting edge research at Pitt. Students are matched with research mentors, participate in weekly seminars and lab meetings and conduct laboratory based research.  Housing in a modern University dormatory is provided along with social activities that enable students to enjoy life in Pittsburgh. If you are contemplating graduate school in the biomedical sciences, then SURP can help give you the experience needed to make an informed decision. Applications are due by March 1st. APPLY HERE
