Structural Biology Workshop

Category: Workshop
Description:

Hauptman-Woodward is dedicated to developing successful education programs for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. HWI is training the future scientific leaders of Buffalo– and perhaps our next Nobel Laureate.

Presenting material not typically offered in undergraduate programs, this three day workshop will educate STEM majors and aspiring MD/PhD candidates on the impact and basic principles of structural biology and commonly-used structural biology techniques.

Day 1: Introduction to structural biology, the significance of protein structures and functions and a hands-on PyMOL tutorial given by HWI students and faculty.

Day 2: More advanced material, provided by guest lecturers, on the available techniques and their advantages and limitations.

Day 3: Focuses on the array of scientific careers available. Featuring guest talks from scientists at key partners on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical campus who will describe their work and the types of careers they support. The final day also includes tours of the various facilities on the BNMC and a networking social event. Participants will be awarded completion certificates.
