2015 NSF STC Professional Development Workshop

Category: Workshop
Description:

The NSF is excited to announce a National Science Foundation sponsored professional development workshop for advanced Ph.D. students and postdocs. This all expense-paid workshop is designed to help participants succeed in both academic and industrial careers by providing them with a wide range of important professional skills and knowledge. The workshop, which will run from August 2 to August 7, 2015 in Indianapolis, IN, has been developed with direct input from STC students, post docs and staff, along with guidance from a range of academic, industry, and career services professionals from the STC network and beyond.

  • Identify and assess the distinct combination of their expertise, interests, skills, and values and through this process be able to articulate their distinctiveness to others.
  • Learn the skills in self-advocacy and negotiation as owners of their own professional development and career choices.
  • Become more aware of their biases and understand how to work collaboratively with others in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Further enhance their verbal/written communications, teaching/training, resource development and knowledge transfer skills, through actual team projects and presentations.
  • Research career fields beyond traditional academic opportunities and launching a job search.
  • Create their own developmental professional/personal network and manage those relationships professionally and effectively.

Each STC is encouraged to identify several advanced Ph.D. students or post docs from each Center to apply. It is NSF’s hope that there are at least two participants from each STC. Nominees should be those who are close to entering the work force whether in academia or industry and are either U.S. Citizens, or international students that show high promise for joining the U.S. workforce. NSF particularly encourages the nomination of applicants from underrepresented groups in STEM fields.

Students and post docs can apply for this workshop through the online application on this web page which will be available April 27, 2015. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. EST on June 1, 2015. The application will consist of completed application form, a CV, and a short personal statement about personal/professional goals.
