Joseph Luft is a Senior Research Scientist at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, NY, with 30 years of crystallization experience. His collaborative proposal with BioXFELs, Optimizing XFEL use - Identifying those nanocrystal samples that require XFELs from those that do not, was awarded to distinguish biomacromolecular samples/crystals that can be readily optimized to sufficient volume for standard diffraction methods from those that will require the XFEL.

Luft earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from D’Youville College in 1985. His qualifications include nearly three decades of crystallization research beginning his career at the Medical Foundation of Buffalo (Hauptman-Woodward Institute) in 1985; his research has focused on the physical-chemical investigation of the crystallization process and method development. His experience with high- throughput methods for characterizing and crystallizing proteins is extensive, and pre-dates the PSI. During the past two decades, he has been actively pursuing his research interests as a PI, co-PI, and co-I, on numerous proposals funded by local foundations, NASA, DTRA, NIH and NSF with an unabridged publication record that clearly demonstrates a history of productive, collaborative research, with 87 peer-reviewed publications, 11 book chapters and 2 patents having in total more than 2,400 citations to his work.
