Abstract

These notes present basic principles of the physics that underlies X-ray analysis of the atomic structure of matter. In particular, classical electromagnetic wave theory of X-ray scattering by electrons and atoms is described as background for subsequent study of X-ray diffraction methods for determining the three-dimensional atomic structure of molecules and crystals.

The notes are intended for biology or chemistry students who might not have a strong background in physics and mathematics, so concepts from elementary physics are briefly introduced or reviewed as needed, and almost all of the mathematical material is written out in explicit detail, step-by-step.
