UNLV Student Opportunities

Research Opportunities for UNLV Students

X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) present unique capabilities that have the potential to revolutionize structural biology and its ability to probe the biological world. BioXFEL is a NSF Science and Technology Center that is focused on developing new techniques, educating the general public and generating interest in XFEL technology. BioXFEL is dedicated to sharing resources with the students of UNLV to help engage them in all types of activities within the Science and Technology Center.  These activities will be occurring throughout the year and are described below.

BioXFEL STC Annual Conferences in January

The BioXFEL Science and Technology Center is pleased to announce that it will host its annual international conference in Las Vegas in 2017. Every year, the members of the Center convene to discuss their recent results, share ideas, and forge new collaborations with their colleagues. This is a great opportunity for UNLV faculty and scholars to learn more about the STC's research, meet our world-class scientists, and engage in our educational outreach programs. Every conference includes Professional Development activities, Education events and guest speakers and scheduled time for social interactions between new students and BioXFEL Scholars. For more information on our conference please refer to our website at http://www.BioXFEL.org/2017Conference

UNLV Undergraduate Summer Internships

BioXFEL offers a 10 week summer internship for undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in physics, biochemistry, biophysics, engineering, programming, mathematics and other related fields. This is a highly competitive program where students will be given hands-on training in XFEL-related laboratory techniques. Internships run from May 30th – August 4th. For more information on the program and how to register, please visit our website (www.bioxfel.org/education/undergraduate-internships). Applicants must be US residents or nationals. Women and minorities underrepresented in STEM fields are strongly encouraged to apply.

Online Journal Clubs and Seminars

Our online lecture series and Journal Clubs are open to all who are interested.  All presentations are recorded and posted to our website www.bioxfel.org.  Contact Bill Bauer at This email address is being protected from spambots. Scientific Collaborations for UNLV Faculty

BioXFEL is interested in involving UNLV faculty in the Center's research via scientific collaborations. Opportunities exist to collaborate on protein crystallography projects, solution scattering experiments, sample delivery design, algorithm development, data processing and much more. The research conducted by the Center spans a broad range of disciplines, including: Structural Biology, Biophysics, Applied Mathematics, and Computational Physics. For a more complete list of the topics covered by our researchers, please visit our Scientific Projects page. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
