XFEL Lightsource Seminar

Category: Seminar
Description:

BioXFEL is pleased to announce its XFEL Lightsource Seminar for Industry Scientists and BioXFEL members.  This seminar will be held Monday, June 20th and is free of charge.  Participants may attend in person at the Hauptman-Woodward Institute in Buffalo, NY or through the web conferencing service Zoom.

X-ray free electron laser sources radically advance our ability to visualize biological processes. In this morning meeting we introduce the NSF funded Biology with X-ray Lasers Science and Technology Center (BioXFEL STC) and their work in developing the use of X-ray free electron lasers in biology. Recent advances in XFEL technology have enabled new imaging techniques using: crystals smaller than those previously usable, solutions and potentially single particles, and time-resolved studies on a much faster time scale.

In the first session, BioXFEL members will describe the new and different approaches to the Center's current research and the potential for future applications. They will discuss the practical sample requirements and delivery methods and address the computational challenges involved in XFEL data collection. Finally, the seminar will offer a chance to meet and greet the BioXFEL members and potentially develop collaborative projects that could build industry knowledge in the use of XFELs here in the US and the increasing number worldwide. It is a short meeting, but one that we hope will be high in practical information, content, and opportunity.

Morning Session: BioXFEL Opportunities for Industry

Introduction to XFEL Science and the BioXFEL STC

BioXFEL Center Director, Dr. Eaton Lattman, will provide attendees with a brief overview of the basics of XFEL science as well as an introduction to the BioXFEL Science and Technology Center.

Introduction to XFEL Science and the BioXFEL STC

The second talk will be given by the BioXFEL STC Scientific Director, Dr. John Spence. This talk will describe some of the recent applications developed by STC scientists.

Solution Scattering at XFELs

XFELs offer unique opportunities for studying the structures of molecules in solution. The high brightness and short exposure time provided by XFELs not only push the spatial and temporal resolution limits of existing time-resolved solution scattering experiments at synchrotrons, but they also enable completely novel types of solution scattering that can reveal orders of magnitude more information than conventional scattering. During this talk, I will discuss the latest solution scattering research conducted at XFELs and the potential capabilities with new light sources coming online in the next few years.

Viscous Jets at XFELs and Synchrotrons; Applications to Very High Speed Data Collection and Other Delivery Methods Including Meshes and Tapes

The method of serial crystallography, which has shown remarkable potential at XFELs for solving medically important GPCRs, has recently also been applied at synchrotron sources. In this talk, an overview of these experiments will be given, and sample delivery methods for synchrotron serial crystallography measurements will be discussed. Microcrystal delivery in a highly viscous stream has reduced sample consumption at XFELs considerably and will be discussed in detail. This sample delivery method is also compatible to synchrotron measurements and first experiments will be show. The BioXFEL high viscosity injector device developed at ASU has been sold to many synchrotrons around the world.  Other sample delivery methods useful for serial crystallography will be shown. These delivery methods in combination with Serial Crystallography might open up new ways for high throughput drug discovery and help establishing a structure based drug discovery platform.

Afternoon Session: XFEL Lightsource Seminar

The second session of the day will focus on international lightsources that are currently available or are in development. This session will provide an overview of the options available to scientists that utilize XFELs now and in the near future. Each representative will discuss the unique characteristics and recent developments of their lightsource.
