Session 1 - 1st Floor Classroom:   High-throughput sample screening, sample prep, imaging and data analysis. – Delivered by Joe Luft and Edward Snell, HWI High Throughput Laboratory (HTS)

  • Includes a virtual tour of Macroscope and a tour of the HTS lab
  • Students/postdocs will analyze their previously submitted samples in real time during the session (see below for details on sample submission)

Session 2 -  2nd Floor Lab :  Preparation and handling of nanocrystals – Delivered by Petra Fromme (ASU) and former member Chris Kupitz (UWM)

  • Members of the Fromme Lab at ASU and Chris Kupitz of UWM will cover practical considerations for the preparation, handling and delivery nanocrystals

Session 3 - 3rd Floor X-ray Room : The identification of nanocrystals – Delivered by  Edward Snell

  • Introduction and overview of the SONICC
  • Powder diffraction will be covered in depth and if time permits light scattering

Session 4 - 1st Floor Classroom : MacGyver Challenge the BioXFEL edition – Delivered by BioXFEL PI’s and Staff.

  • Use your improvisation and collaboration skills to develop a career-saving device

Session 5 - 3rd Floor Lab : Lab in a suitcase – Delivered by Alex Ros

  • Introduction to the techniques and equipment:
1) Microfluidic crystal sorting to reduce size heterogeneity of crystal suspensions
2) Droplet injection to reduce sample amount for crystallography with XFELs
3) Microfluidic crystal growth screening with the ‘Christmas Tree’ device
  • Attendees are encouraged to bring a nanocrystal suspensions to try crystal sorting with a microfluidic system

Crystallization Sample Submission Details

We will be offering our high-throughput crystallization screening services for free to all workshop participants. You will have the opportunity to submit your own sample, review your crystallization results in Session 1 of the workshop, and get advice and training in image and data analysis. This could be a great opportunity to find new crystallization conditions and have the results analyzed by our in-house crystallization experts. You do not have to submit a sample to participate in this session, but it will be a much more useful experience if you do.

We have 2 types of customized screens available, one for soluble proteins and one for membrane proteins.

Soluble screen details:

Reserve your spot before April 10
Ship your sample so that it arrives between April 14-16 or April 20-23
Soluble Protein Screen - Order and Submission Forms
This service is only free for workshop participants

Membrane screen details:
Reserve your spot before April 2
Ship your sample so that it arrives between April 7-9
Membrane Protein Screen - Order and Submission Forms
This service is free to all users until May 2015

If you are interested in using this service, please let me know as soon as you can and I can help arrange your submission. This will only be free if you attend the associated workshop session and we ask that you limit your samples to 1 per person for this event. If you have any further questions please contact Bill Bauer .
