  • Biography

Ken Tramposch, Ph.D., University at Buffalo (UB) Associate Vice President for Research is part of a team responsible for implementing projects and policies to foster the university-wide growth of externally sponsored research. UB research expenditures, currently more than $350 million, support a wide range of research and creative activities. His primary goal is to enable greater collaboration among different disciplines to create multi-disciplinary teams leading to new cutting-edge research centers. His experience includes the development of university/industry partnerships focused on advancing scientific fields needed to support future industrial innovation.

Dr. Tramposch is also Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He has published more than 60 research papers on the molecular basis of inflammation pharmacology especially as it relates to the mechanism of action of steroid hormones and retinoids. The overall goal of this work is to develop novel drugs for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. His research and the work of colleagues at Bristol-Myers Squibb showed that receptor-selective retinoid ligands could be identified. This research was aided greatly through 3D protein structures obtained through x-ray crystallography. His lab was the first to discover that retinoid efficacy could be separated from retinoid-induced toxicity by using RAR-g-specific agonists.

Prior to joining UB in 2001, he had 21 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with operational and R&D experience in both large pharmaceutical and start-up companies. He has led a number of multi-disciplinary teams resulting in new therapeutic products for which he holds ten patents. Dr. Tramposch is the BioXFEL Center’s Director of Knowledge Transfer.
