  • Biography

    Bill Bauer is the Education and Diversity Director of the BioXFEL Science and Technology Center. Dr. Bauer has a long-standing history with HWI that began with a summer student internship at HWI while attending Elmira College. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and a minor in Art, he entered the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biological Science at the University at Buffalo. Under this program, he continued his relationship with HWI as he pursued a Ph.D. in Structural Biology focused. Dr. Bauer now manages the education and diversity programs of BioXFEL and has mentored countless undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs. He has been creating innovative and customized programming for the Scholars of the Center and the field for over 5 years.

    Following completion of his doctorate in Structural Biology, Dr. Bauer joined the laboratory of Dr. Kielkopf located at the University of Rochester. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked on the X-ray structure solution of several essential RNA splicing factor complexes as well as NMR solution structures of RNA splice sites. Dr. Bauer is also a contributing author on the well-known Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Manual Molecular Cloning and specializes in protein production, purification and crystallization. Most recently, Dr. Bauer has expanded his skill set by completing a postdoctoral fellowship in membrane protein crystallography within the Laboratory of Dr. Michael Malkowski at HWI.
    Throughout his scientific career, Dr. Bauer has had the opportunity to mentor, manage and direct a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students. The experiences have been very rewarding for both Dr. Bauer and the students he has worked with. He looks forward to developing engaging and inclusive programs for the members of the BioXFEL STC as well as the scientific community at large.
