SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is one of the world’s premier research laboratories, providing an internationally leading capability in the form of its accelerator based light sources and its science programs. The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), which is an x-ray free electron laser facility and directorate of SLAC seeks a  Project Scientist with a background in optical and X-ray spectroscopies to join the Hard x-ray department. Members of this department are responsible for developing new instrumentation and methods as well as performing innovative ultrafast experiments using x-ray beams from LCLS.

The main program that you will be part of seeks to develop spectroscopic methods that take advantage of the unique properties of LCLS and SSRL and allow measurements that span the different timescales allowed by the two facilities mainly for bioscience measurements. In this position, you will: 1) operate and maintain existing and future hard x-ray spectroscopy instrumentation at LCLS, 2) work towards the automation of spectroscopic data collection for chemistry and bioscience experiments at LCLS, and 3) support the LCLS User Science program. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at SLAC, Stanford University, and the broader SLAC User community working on simulations and theoretical frameworks of the underlying physics. The successful candidate should be curious, motivated and self-driven.

Note: This is a three-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.  Project Scientists are expected to work with a significant degree of independence on one or more specific tasks in support of the research program, frequently interacting with the laboratory’s scientific community.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. Due to COVID-19-related curtailment of on-site activities, the job duties for this position may be required to be performed from home until full site access is restored.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, biology, biophysics or related field with demonstrated coursework or experience including:
    • X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy
    • UV-Vis spectroscopy
  • Demonstrated experience as evidenced by a publication record commensurate with level of work experience.
  • Ability to carry out independent research.
  • Strong analytical and experimental skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.

In addition, desired skills and experience include:

  • User facility operations and research.
  • X-ray scattering techniques.
  • Script and program writing in Python
  • Experience in automation.

Members of HXR are responsible for developing new instrumentation and methods as well as performing innovative ultrafast experiments using x-ray beams from LCLS.  The SED group specifically focuses on sample preparation, characterization and delivery.

The main program that you will be part of seeks to develop methods for serial crystallography that take advantage of the unique properties of LCLS and SSRL and allow measurements that span the different timescales allowed by the two facilities for bioscience measurements. In this position, you will: 1) participate in a Research and Development program focused on the sample preparation, characterization, delivery for serial crystallography experiments at LCLS and SSRL, 2) work towards the automation of serial x-ray crystallography data collection for bioscience experiments at LCLS, and 3) support the LCLS User Science program. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at SLAC, Stanford University, and the broader SLAC User community working on simulations and theoretical frameworks of the underlying physics.
